NASA: Sun’s Approaching ”Grand Cooling” Assures New Ice Age

NASA and the ESA agree, and so does the Russian space agency, Roscosmos—the sun is headed for a Grand Solar Minimum and a Grand Cooling will commence.

Source: Helium.com February 18, 2011

The aptly named Grand Cooling is exactly what it implies: the sun is going to cool. That cooling will also cool off the Earth. It will last from 30 to 50 years.

What exactly does global cooling mean? Well for one, Al Gore was sure wrong! The Earth isn’t going to warm, it’s going to get colder. Much colder. So cold a little or full-blown Ice Age will ensue. As a matter of fact, some scientists claim we’re already in the early stages of an Ice Age.

Dutch Professor Cees de Jager, a prominent astronomer and solar expert, forcefully asserts that we the world is indeed entering for a long period of very low solar activity. The professor and his colleagues are certain Earth is heading for a ”long Grand Minimum”—defined as either a Solar Wolf-Gleissberg or a Maunder Minimum—”not shorter than a century.” His 2010 paper, ”The forthcoming Grand Minimum of solar activity,” outlined the extended period of time that the diminished solar radiation would affect the Earth.

Astronomers found first Planet suitable for Life

Astronomers say they have found the first planet beyond our solar system that has just the right size and locale to sustain life as we know it, only 20 light-years from Earth.

MSNBC: The discovery, published online in The Astrophysical Journal, is the result of 11 years of observations at the Keck Observatory in Hawaii.

Now they say there may well be many more planets out there like this one.

”Our findings offer a very compelling case for a potentially habitable planet,” Steven Vogt, an astrophysicist at the University of California at Santa Cruz, said in a news release.

”The fact that we were able to detect this planet so quickly and so nearby tells us that planets like this must be really common.”

More facts:  An extrasolar planet, or exoplanet, is a planet beyond the Solar System, orbiting around another star. As of September 2010, 490 exoplanets have been detected and confirmed. The vast majority were detected through various indirect methods rather than actual imaging. Most of them are massive giant planets thought to resemble Jupiter, though this is likely to be due to limitations in detection technology.

More recent unconfirmed detections suggest that much smaller worlds may be considerably more common than previous figures have suggested.

Agropolis: The Future of Urban Agriculture?

Last week at the Nordic Exceptional Trendshop 2010, held in Denmark, one presentation took urban agriculture to the next level. A collaboration with NASA, you might even say it launched urban agriculture out of this world, and into the future.

Text from Justmeans, ENN, Sep 2010

The idea is called Agropolis, a combination grocery store, restaurant, and farm all in one building, employing the most advanced technologies in hydroponic, aeroponic, and aquaponic farming.

As it stands, Agropolis is still just a mere idea, with little more than some cool graphics to back it up. But regardless, Agropolis ushers forth a new wave of thinking about urban food systems. The team behind the Agropolis concept proposes that this new generation of store would be an ecosystem unto itself, a finely tuned orchestra of parts in balance, that would not only be totally envrionmentally sustainably and friendly, but also just plain producing the freshest food around.

”Observe the Moon Night”

NASA needs to evolve for the future, not get stuck in the past, the agency’s deputy chief said this week.

Speaking at an event at Manhattan’s Explorers Club, NASA’s second in command, Lori Garver, said it was time to kick start commercial spaceflight to low-Earth orbit and shift NASA’s focus to more ambitious exploration missions.

”Our space program needs to not be reliving the space program of the past,” she said. ”We have been trying to relive Apollo for 40 years now.”

Instead of sending astronauts back to the moon, Garver espoused the new plan put forward by President Barack Obama to pursue trips to an asteroid and Mars. Meanwhile, NASA would try to shift the responsibility for transporting people to the International Space Station to the private sector, which has already made some strides toward commercial spacecraft capable of reaching orbit.

People who think more about whether they are right have more cells in an area of the brain known as the frontal lobes.

By Katie Alcock, Science reporter, BBC News

UK scientists, writing in Science, looked at how brain size varied depending on how much people thought about decisions. But a nationwide survey recently found that some people think too much about life. These people have poorer memories, and they may also be depressed. The study is the first to show that there are physical differences between people with regards to how big this area is. These size differences relate to how much they think about their own decisions.

This Saturday night people will be gathering in groups around the world to examine Earth’s nearest celestial neighbor as part of the first ever International Observe the Moon Night.

The global event is a joint project between NASA and several partners to raise awareness about the scientific importance of the moon, such as studying how the solar system formed or planning any future human missions to the lunar surface.

”If we can get people to notice the moon a little more, they might notice it when it’s in the news,” said Andy Shaner, a spokesperson for the Lunar and Planetary Institute in Houston, which is helping to coordinate the event.

Independent,  by Hugh O’Shaughnessy, Sunday, 26 Sep  2010

The world’s most powerful woman will most probably be Dilma Rousseff. Stocky and forceful at 63, this former leader of the resistance to a Western-backed military dictatorship (which tortured her) is preparing to take her place as President of Brazil.

As head of state, president Dilma Rousseff would outrank Angela Merkel, Germany’s Chancellor, and Hillary Clinton, the US Secretary of State: her enormous country of 200 million people is revelling in its new oil wealth. Brazil’s growth rate, rivalling China’s, is one that Europe and Washington can only envy.

Her widely predicted victory in next Sunday’s presidential poll will be greeted with delight by millions. It marks the final demolition of the ”national security state”, an arrangement that conservative governments in the US and Europe once regarded as their best artifice for limiting democracy and reform. It maintained a rotten status quo that kept a vast majority in poverty in Latin America while favouring their rich friends.
